But summer is coming no matter how you feel about it, and while you’re busy lining up weekend getaways, you might also take a second look at your eyewear for the season. Whether you frequent the Venice boardwalk or shuttle to the Atlantic shore, beach days are in your imminent future. Sitting seaside with zero thoughts of any of life’s responsibilities is one of the ultimate summer indulgences. However, if you plan on wearing glasses to see the sunset in full splendor, your time at the beach could be less than peaceful.
1. You’re no match for the ocean without your glasses
Have you ever tried to frolic in the ocean while blindfolded? Probably not, and for good reason. A beach day isn’t a beach day without testing the waters, whether you’re a pro surfer or you just need to cool off. If you have to take your glasses off to jump in, it might not go as smoothly as you’d envisioned if you can’t see that wave that’s about to knock you over or the crab you should probably sidestep as you’re waking up.
2. And it’s still not your friend if you’re wearing them
You came to the beach to swim, so you brave the waves, lenses and all. All is “swell” until you take a dive and the undertow sweeps your glasses out to sea. Maybe it’ll be a lucky day for a turtle with bad eyesight.
3. Swimming is only the tip of the iceberg
Beach activities are ENDLESS! You can fly a kite, build a sandcastle, ride bikes on the boardwalk, read a book — the list goes on. Sweet, simple fun in the sun…as you endlessly adjust your glasses to prevent them from sliding down your sweaty nose all day long.
4. You might get sand in places you really don’t want it
Like all over your lenses, scratching them (adios, summer music festival funds). And not to mention sunscreen! That greasy cream can cover your glasses with annoying blurry patches that are tough to get out, and you probably didn’t think to toss lens cleaner into your beach bag.
5. Two pairs are worse than one
Whether you go for style or function, sunglasses are one essential you can’t survive the beach day without. But have you ever tried to fit your favorite specs over your glasses? Spoiler alert: it feels terrible and won’t earn you any fashion points.
6. You’ll have to wave your beach volleyball career goodbye
Acing that serve without your glasses? Good luck. With them, you still might get hit in the face. And your glasses might break. And more importantly, your glasses breaking against your face would really hurt.
7. Glasses tans are the new farmer’s
You won’t soon forget your day at the beach because there might be a nice glasses-shaped reminder on your face for the next few days. You could think of it as a permanent Snapchat filter, minus the dazzling glow and highlighted cheekbones. #Blessed.
It’s pretty difficult to have a bad time at the beach, but glasses make it much, much easier. When looking ahead to Summer ‘17, you might want to consider how this summer could be your best yet if you throw your glasses overboard for good.
If you haven’t considered LASIK in a while, take a look at www.backinfocus.com. It might not seem like vision correction and maximum enjoyment of a seaside Piña Colada go hand in hand, but you’ll see.
